"Vitamins Taste Like Dying" review

6/27/2008
8 out of 10

Goes Well With: Incubus, No Knife (no, that ain't a misprint)

Compare abs with Brendan Boyd. Bang his head in slo-mo while fronting a heavy metal tribute band. Rock like a fucking hurricane. These are all things you could picture Senate Arcade's vocalist Todd Schlosser doing had he not had the snobby little idea to join an indie rock band.

The Seattle power-indie trio (that's a new one, but when guitars math out on yer ass and the vocalist is a bellow away from a Creed, you gotta create new jargon) feel like an invasion-- only, it's not apparent which way it's going. Either Matt Terich's algorithmic guitar scales suggest Minus the Bear sniffing around Rock's picnic basket, or Schlosser's deep-throated yet high-toned sweetvoice suggests that Queensryche is reinventing itself for the D.C. post-punk crowd.

It does both without selling out either demographic, nor copping to them- a power rock band for weedling guitar-loving indie rock kids.
